Tuku iho, he tapu te upoko. From our ancestors, the head is sacred.
Our Whare Pōtae Collection seeks to honour, protect and cherish our upoko (head) the same way we do with pounamu, our head being one of the most tapu (sacred) parts of our body.
MATAU
The traditional roots of this taonga derive from the legend of Māui, who used a magical hook to fish up Te Ika-a-Māui (the North Island of Aotearoa). The matau has come to represent prosperity, abundance and safe travels across water.
